In concert with splendid U.S. partners, WGLO has dependably supported the Center of Peace orphanage in Phnom Penh which cares for more than 70 children and youth. For years, a Birmingham, Alabama, company has provided COP with generous support.
WGLO also supports two small schools in Kampong Cham province: Emanuel Christian School in the village of Broyouk and a small preschool in Kandas (“Hill Village”). In honor of former school principal Ralph Boardman, Trinity Lutheran Church, Lansing, Illinois, provides regular support to Emanuel. The ladies of Trinity also help meet the health needs of the 30 children in Kandas. The children of St. John Lutheran School, Ellisville, Missouri, recently helped Kandas by providing funds to excavate a desperately needed water reservoir and purchase ceramic water filters and other health supplies.
We rely on our superb Khmer staff: Sochenda Srey (WGLO country representative) and her father, Chamreoun Srey (project coordinator), to oversee the orphanage and school programs. The daughter-father team has also enabled us to respond quickly and accurately to emergency situations. Recently, in a matter of hours, they were able to bring in by boat food and other supplies to 97 Kandas families stranded by heavy flooding.
WGLO's one-room school becomes the evacuation center for the Kandas community.
