Madagascar
Madagascar
Madagascar, the foot-shaped island off Africa’s southeast coast, is considered the 11th most impoverished nation in the world (poorer than Uganda; poorer than Haiti). The World Bank estimates that 70% of the Malagasy population survives on one dollar or less per day.

Serving within this context, the Malagasy Lutheran Church strives to meet both the spiritual and physical needs of its three million members. During an August 2011 visit to Madagascar, we were touched when we saw extremely poor people taking great pains to serve other extremely poor people.

Past WGLO efforts in Madagascar have included well-drilling, latrine-building, and food-for-work efforts.

Plans are underway to ship a 40-foot container to Madagascar in early 2012 containing Kids Against Hunger emergency foodstuff, powdered milk, school and medical supplies. WGLO is appealing to Lutheran school students and parents, and to anyone interested in assisting with this ingathering.
